Diplo is an American DJ, record producer, songwriter and label executive based in Los Angeles, California.(His alias, short for Diplodocus, derives from his childhood fascination with dinosaurs) He is the co-creator and lead member of the electronic dancehall music project, Major Lazer, and along with producer and DJ Skrillex, part of the electronic duo Jack Ü. He founded and manages record company Mad Decent.

Relationship[]

Diplo has known Justin's manager, Scooter, for many years as he used to manage Kelis. Scooter showed him respect back then and was really nice to him, so he always just kept Scooter within arm’s length. [1]

Justin Bieber at XS Las Vegas

Justin came to Las Vegas one night when Diplo played “Where Are U Now.” ‘We played our song and he was like, “Yo, man, I want to thank you, because this is the first time I’ve ever had adults clap for me. This is like a big deal.”’[2][3]

Career[]

2012: Believe[]

Diplo worked on about four or five ideas but only one made the album.[4]

2015: Purpose[]

Diplo talked to Scooter Braun at a New York Fashion Week party, and was like, “This sounds crazy but let's do a record." Scooter was like, “We have nothing to lose by giving you this song." Diplo explained: “They had hit a place where nothing was working for them, and Justin had kinda hit rock bottom with things, like from the press, from jail, and from, like, taking his pants down at an awards show or something. I wasn’t even paying attention, but I know that he wasn’t very cool. And I was trying to really help Skrillex rebrand his own project, too. If nothing else, I thought working with Bieber would be the most noticeable thing we could do. It would be a great record, and it would make everyone really fucked up. It would make them really disappointed in themselves, and really confused, like, 'How do I like this record?'”[5][1]

Justin Bieber said that Skrillex and Diplo would be working on his next album on Miami’s Power 96, stating, "I think me and these guys are going to collaborate on my next record and do something really special.”[6]

Diplo and Justin did around five rap songs.[3]

2020: Changes[]

In 2019, Diplo tried to get Bieber on his track called “Lonely” but that didn't work so it ended up being recorded by the Jonas Brothers.[7]

2021: Justice[]

Diplo pitched a song written by Msaki to Justin Bieber but it didn't work for the album.[8]

2021[]

In June 2021, Diplo posted a video on TikTok where Justin texted him “Did you get those vocals I sent over the other day?”.
