Selena Marie Gomez (born July 22, 1992) is an American actress and singer. She has been in an on and off relationship with Justin Bieber from the summer of 2010 to early March 2018, after being close friends with him for over a year.

Selena Marie Gomez was born in Texas to Amanda Dawn "Mandy" Cornett (born on April 16, 1976) and Ricardo Joel "Rick" Gomez (born on March 6, 1975). Her parents were 15 years-old when they started dating and they were both in high school in Grand Prairie, Texas. Mandy got pregnant at 15 and gave birth to Selena three months after her 16th birthday. Mandy and Rick eventually moved in together and got married. She's Italian on her mother's side and Mexican on her father's side. She grew up with the Mexican culture and learnt to speak Spanish fluently at 18.
In 1997, when Selena was only 5 years-old, her parents separated, then got divorced. She was mostly raised by her mother and her maternal grand-parents Debbie and David Cornett, but she would often spend time with her father and her paternal grand-parents Mary and Ricardo Gomez.
In May 2006, her mom married Brian James Teefey (born on January 8, 1979) after three years of dating. In 2011, when Selena was 19, her mom got pregnant with her second child. However, in December 2011, when Mandy was six months pregnant with her daughter Scarlett Teefey, she had a miscarriage. Towards the end of 2012, she got pregnant again and gave birth to her third daughter named Gracie Elliott Teefey on June 12, 2013. The family lives in California.
In November 2012, her dad married Sara Diane Tovar (born on August 11, 1981) after a couple years of dating. Selena has a step-brother named Marcus (born in 2008). Sara gave birth to the couple's daughter Victoria "Tori" Gomez on June 24, 2014. The family lives is Texas.
Selena is best friends with American singer Taylor Swift since 2008. She's also close friends with Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Raquelle Stevens, Ashley Cook and Courtney Lopez.

The Jelena story began in 2009. A 15-year-old Justin Bieber started to get worldwidely famous for his One Less Lonely Girl hit. During interviews, he would mention 17-year-old Selena Gomez as his "celebrity crush". Scooter Braun then called Selena's mom so they can meet up.[1] They got along real quick and became close friends. Gomez even said they were very protective of each other and were always checking in on each other. On December 31, 2009, Bieber invited Gomez on stage with him at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve so that he could sing his song One Less Lonely Girl to her.[2]

In 2010, the media and the fans were convinced the pair was secretly dating but Bieber and Gomez kept saying they were "just friends". Gomez said multiple times during interviews she's had "Bieber fever" and was for sure a "Belieber".

By September 2010, Gomez denied allegations of her dating Justin by calling him her "little brother" on the Ellen DeGeneres show. The following month, they were seen hanging out a lot more than usual. However, singer Jasmine V confirmed she was dating Justin at the time, because they were touring together and she was the opening act.[3]
In late November 2010, Justin and Selena were celebrating Thanksgiving together with Gomez's family. In December 2010, they were spotted holding hands and cuddling. Hearing about the rumours, both Gomez and Bieber expressed how much they have been "only best friends for over a year". However, in January 2011, they were spotted getting intimate on a private yacht in St. Lucia for New Year's Eve.

In late February 2011, Bieber and Gomez made their public debut as a couple at the Vanity Fair Oscars party and were even spotted kissing in a photobooth.[4] Three months later, Gomez was Bieber's date at the Billboard Music Awards and kissed him when he won an award. Ever since they made their relationship official, Gomez started to get a lot of hate from her boyfriend's fanbase. She even received death threats and negative comments on social media.

In late May 2011, it was reported that an 18-year-old Gomez lost her virginity to an 17-year-old Bieber during their first romantic getaway in Hawaii and Bieber bragged about it to a friend.[5] During the summer of 2011, Bieber took Gomez to Canada so she could meet his entire family. In September of 2011, Bieber privated the entire Staples Center just so he could enjoy a movie night with Gomez.[6]

In November 2011, they were rumored to be broken up after a young woman claimed she had sex with Bieber backstage at a show in October 2010 and had his child. A paternity test proved the young woman was lying for attention. A few weeks after the drama, Bieber and Gomez attended the American Music Awards together and seemed very much happy.

In April 2012, they were rumored to be engaged but 18-year-old Bieber made it very clear he wasn't considering marrying Gomez anytime soon. However they bought a house in Los Angeles and moved in together. In late September 2012, Bieber started travelling the world for his Believe Tour and Gomez said during an interview they were missing each other. The following month, Bieber tweeted the word "single" making people believe the couple was broken up.

On November 12, 2012, their breakup was confirmed after Bieber allegedly cheated on Gomez with Hungarian's model Barbara Palvin. In late December 2012, the pair went on a vacation together for New Year's Eve, assuming they were back together. However they broke up once again in early January 2013. Gomez made their breakup official in March 2013 on the Late Show with David Letterman. They briefly reconciled from April to July 2013. That year, Gomez released a song called Love Will Remember that was written about her relationship with Bieber. She even used Bieber's voicemail as the intro for the song. Her complicated relationship with Bieber has been mentionned a lot in her Stars Dance album. In December 2013, Bieber released a song about Gomez called All That Matters and said in an radio interview she was his "first true love".

In late January 2014, Bieber and Gomez were spotted hanging out together with friends in Los Angeles. In March 2014, a video of them dancing together went viral on social media. In July 2014, it was confirmed they were back together. Later on, Bieber got into a physical fight with British actor Orlando Bloom in Ibiza, igniting speculation that Gomez was at the root of their heated fight, as Gomez and Bloom had been spotted hanging out together earlier that year. Also, Bieber allegedly hooked up with Bloom's ex-wife Miranda Kerr in late 2012 when she was still married to Bloom. Three months later, in early October, Gomez posted a series of cryptic tweets igniting speculation that the couple have broken up.

In November 2014, Gomez made their breakup official by releasing a heartbreaking song called The Heart Wants What It Wants. Later that month, she performed that song at the American Music Awards. This was the only time she publicly performed the song. At the end of her performance, Gomez broke down in tears. Soon afterwards, Bieber posted a quote on Instagram saying : "Sometimes love isn't a feeling, but a choice [...] It's easy to love when you feel it, but love when it's hard to love". He unfollowed her on social media a few weeks later and was rumored to be dating 18-year-old model Hailey Baldwin.
In February 2015, Bieber released a song called Where Are Ü Now that was written about Gomez, after taking a break from music for over a year. In May 2015, Bieber and Gomez were seen hanging out together at a diner with mutual friends. However they were not back together since Gomez was allegedly dating German DJ Zedd. In June 2015, Bieber dropped the music video for Where Are Ü Now in which fans found Gomez's name in the graffiti. In late August 2015, Bieber released his new album's first single called What Do You Mean? that was rumored to be about his relationship with Gomez. Bieber confirmed the rumors himself on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in September 2015.

In October 2015, Gomez released her new album titled Revival which was mostly inspired by her relationship with Bieber. During an interview, Bieber stated he was not over Gomez, considering she was someone he loved dearly but he never listened to her album. He also revealed he wrote a song called If I Would Have Met You In 5 Years that he was planning on putting on his album Purpose, but then changed his mind at the very last minute. On November 20, 2015, Bieber surprised Gomez in a hotel's bar in Beverly Hills by singing My Girl (by The Temptations) to her in front of everyone. They were filmed slow-dancing and then kissing before leaving the bar together. Days later, Gomez attended his AMA's after party and by early December 2015, they were seen hanging out together. However that same month, Bieber started dating for the second time 19-year-old Hailey Baldwin and Gomez started dating fashion designer Samuel Krost.
On March 19, 2016, Bieber posted an old picture of him and Gomez kissing with the caption "Feels" on Instagram. Gomez liked his post and responded "Perfect". The following week, she was seen at his concert in Los Angeles for his Purpose World Tour. In the spring of 2016, Gomez began her Revival Tour and performed an unreleased song called Feel Me that was written about Bieber cheating on her. Gomez even ripped out a fan's sign saying "Marry Justin please" in the middle of a performance.
In August 2016, Bieber and Gomez got into a heated argument on Instagram when Bieber snapped at his fans for bullying his new girlfriend Sofia Richie. They roasted each other for a while and then just stopped talking to each other for a whole year. By December 2016, Gomez was confirmed to be in a serious relationship with Canadian singer The Weeknd. Bieber roasted their relationship during an interview in early 2017. In February 2017, Canadian rapper and record producer NAV released a song called Some Way featuring The Weeknd, as the lead single from his self-titled debut commercial mixtape, in which The Weeknd dissed Bieber with NAV also taking a shot at him in his verse.[7]

Months later, in September 2017, Gomez revealed on social media she's had a kidney transplant during the summer of 2017 due to her Lyme disease. Bieber then reached out to her to reconcile even though she was still dating The Weeknd. In late October 2017, they were seen hanging out together. Soon afterwards, Gomez broke up with The Weeknd even though they were living together in Manhattan, NY. In early November 2017, Bieber and Gomez were spotted kissing and cuddling at an ice hockey game in Los Angeles. According to TMZ, Bieber reached out to his ex-girlfriend Hailey Baldwin in December 2017 to apologize for the way he's had treated her in the past. Gomez allegedly got upset which led to a huge fight between the two over Baldwin. They ended up going to couples' therapy to work through their issues. A couple of weeks later, they both flew to Mexico to spend New Year's Eve together with some of their friends.

Later on, it was revealed Gomez was no longer talking to her mom Mandy Teefey because she wasn't supportive of their relationship. TMZ reported Gomez's family was not a fan of Bieber and thought Gomez deserved better. In February 2018, the pair spent Valentine's Day together. Later that month, Gomez was Bieber's date to his father's wedding in Jamaica. On March 1st, 2018, Gomez made their relationship official by wishing him a happy birthday on Instagram.
However, only a week after confirming they were back together, it was reported they both decided to "take a break". According to TMZ, Bieber and Gomez had a few disagreements and one big fight that influenced them on taking a break. In late March 2018, The Weeknd released an album titled My Dear Melancholy in which he shaded both Gomez and Bieber in the entitled song I Was Never There.[8]
As "sources" confirmed Bieber and Gomez would eventually get back together in the next few months, Bieber rekindled his romance with ex-girlfriend Hailey Baldwin in early June 2018. The couple got engaged the following month and were legally married by September 2018. In October 2018, Gomez went to rehab after having a huge mental breakdown which was allegedly caused by Bieber's and Baldwin's wedding. She then took a break from her career to get over her depression and found out she has bipolar disorder.
In late 2019, Gomez released two songs entitled Lose You To Love Me and Look At Her Now that were written about the end of her longterm relationship with Bieber. She later on hinted during interviews that she has been mentally abused by Bieber in the past and that their relationship was "extremely toxic". In January 2020, she released an album called Rare in which she talks about going through depression after her terrible breakup with Bieber.
In September 2022, Hailey Bieber gave an interview for Alex Cooper's podcast "Call Her Daddy" explaining she never "stole" Bieber from Gomez and her husband was single for a while before he even tried to get her back. Hailey said the reason why she agreed to get engaged so early in their relationship is because the "Jelena reunion" closed a chapter and Bieber was finally ready to commit to her.
Soon after this interview, Selena and Hailey took pictures together at the Academy Museum Gala to set the record straight about their current relationship.

Selena made it clear during the recording process of Stars Dance (2013) that she wanted to keep the subject matter upbeat. Jason Evigan, one half the production team the Suspex, opened up to MTV News about working with her on the album. "She didn't really want to talk about the Justin stuff too much in her music. She didn't want to bash him. She never wanted to write songs about him."[9]

Ali Tamposi said she "can't necessarily say that "It Ain't Me is directed at Justin, but I do think this is a song for her just displaying her strength as a woman in this industry and that particular place that she is in her life. And it's natural for any human being at her age to be going through the things she's been going through, but the difference is she's caught under a microscope. She can be shamed for her struggles."[10]
